Second Network on Artificial Olfactory Sensing (NOSE II)
The NOSE II Network constituted a European forum operating on the topic
of “artificial olfaction”, including sensor and sensor system
technology, sampling & sample treatment, data evaluation as well as
standardisation of procedures and equipment. An exchange of experience
and knowledge among end-users, researchers, developers, and
manufacturers was stimulated in training courses, through an exchange
programme, and information dissemination via the NOSE II web-site. The network was serving in its 4th year 120 members from all
over Europe.

Description
From the preface to the project proposal:
"This Network of Excellence (NoE) is envisaged to constitute a three
year European forum operating around the general topic of artificial
olfaction, where an intense exchange of information is promoted through
workshops, meetings, schools and exchange programs. It will continue
the successful efforts of the NoE NOSE (Fp4 ESPRIT 29526).
It is intended to improve the effectiveness of European R&D in artificial
olfaction technologies and in particular electronic noses (EN).
It is a forum for information exchange between users, researchers,
developers and producers of devices and systems. The network is
considered an active system disseminating information, suggestions, and
motivations for the development of future instrumentation able to sense
perceivable odours or hazardous and non-hazardous gaseous mixtures of
chemical compounds. Measurable outputs will be utilised in a variety of
application fields."
Network objectives and goals
The main objective of the
network was to stimulate information exchange between scientists,
manufacturers, and end-users in Europe in order to develop synergy in
the sensor community, improve the efficiency of R&D, encourage
interdisciplinary research, and promote application of new ideas. NOSE
II also stimulated the use and development of standards, and fosters
the acceptance and application of the e-nose and sensor technology.
Disseminate information (website, NOSE II events)
Support new collaborations and interdisciplinary research (exchange programme)
Educate and train (short courses and workshops, website)
Encourage and guide research & development
Foster acceptance of sensor and e-nose technology
Implementation of EU policies
Main Activities
Organisation of educational events like short courses (with an
emphasis on fundamentals) and workshops (focused on actual problems
& latest research);
Promotion of new collaboration and inter-disciplinary research by a exchange and fellowship programme;
Technology
demonstrations, promotion of sensors & e-noses and information
dis-semination on fairs and other events to the interested public;
Work Groups (WG) on standardisation:
WG Standard data format for e-nose data: Jan Mitrovics
WG Hardware-Software Interfaces: Cosimo Distante
Co-organisation
and support of international scientific conferences on artificial
olfaction and related topics including exhibition of manufacturers of
e-noses and sensors;
Maintenance of a web server for
information dissemination, with NOSE publications (lecture notes and
activity reports), a URL and address database, discussion forum, and an
overview of e-nose technology and products;
International Steering committee
The advisory and strategic body was the NOSE II Steering Committee (SC) composed of the contractual partners and selected experts from the scientific community and e-nose manufacturers:
A. D’Amico, University of Rome "Tor Vergata" (I);
E. Chanie, Alpha MOS (F);
F. Davide, Telecom Italia (I);
J. Gardner, University of Warwick (UK);
A. Hierlemann, ETH Zurich (CH);

Membership & Members
Network members were mainly active in an area relevant to the use, development, research of artificial olfaction technology, sensors, or sensor systems: large industries, SME’s, academic and research institutions participated in the NOSE II network. NOSE II members were financially supported to participate in NOSE activities and had free access to all sections of the website.
The following table provides an overview on the NOSE II member base.
